Melissa - Violin, Viola
Melissa started playing the viola when she was in the 4th grade. Growing up in Baldwinsville, New York, a small town outside of Syracuse, she was the Principal Violist in her Elementary, Middle School, and High School Orchestras, the Principal Violist in the All County Orchestra (Onondaga County, NY) grades 5-11, a member of the Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra grades 7-12, Associate Principal Viola in the Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra her sophomore and junior years, and Principal Viola in Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra her senior year.
In addition to being a member of her High School String Quartet, Melissa was a member of the 1991 New York All-State Orchestra (NYSSMA). She was also Associate Principal Viola in the Syracuse University Summer Festival Orchestra (1990-1994, 1997). While completing her Bachelor of Education Degree in Speech-Language Pathology (Class of 1996), Melissa was a member of the University of Toledo Symphony Orchestra (1992-1993), took private lessons with Dr. William Terwilliger (1992-1993), and was a 4-year Varsity Award Winner on the University of Toledo’s Women’s Swim Team (1992-1996). While completing her Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology (Class of 1998), Melissa was the graduate assistant for the Syracuse University Men’s and Women’s Swim Team (Fall of 1997).
Melissa is currently a Speech-Language Pathologist in Sylvania Schools, specifically at Maplewood Elementary and Arbor Hills Junior High. She has been involved with Northview’s Varsity Swim team (1998-2008, 2011-2019), the Swimming Lesson Program at the Sylvania Natatorium (Director 2011-2015), St. James Club Summer League Swim Team (1998-2001), Sylvania Country Club’s Summer League Swim Team (2002-2006), and the YMCA/JCC Summer League Swim Team (2007-20012). Melissa is currently a violist in the Sylvania Community Orchestra, the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra, and a String Quartet (“Cats-In-Cases”). She lives in Sylvania with her husband, her son (a Junior at St. Francis), and her daughter (a Freshman at The Ohio State University).
