WHAT RESEARCHERS AGREE:
Learning how to play an instrument improves test scores, helps students with higher math achievement, builds self confidence, improves coordination and problem-solving, increases fine motor development and much more – including fostering the basic intrinsic value of developing a love and joy for the arts and music.
WHAT WE BELIEVE:
We believe that the best way to learn music is with one-on-one, private instruction. Each lesson is tailored individually, for the way the student learns best, depending on the student's skill level and goals. We take into account age, experience, personality, and learning style. We teach ages 5 - adult! It's never too late to learn how to play music.
ONE-ON-ONE ATTENTION:
Students in private lessons are able to learn the type of music they personally are most interested in. Our teachers can focus 100% of their attention on that one student to ensure that hand positioning, posture or the understanding of a particular concept are correct. If a student has a particular difficulty in one area, the teacher can work on it without hampering the progress of a class of students and alternatively, if a student is excelling in one area, the teacher can move on.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
WHAT IS A GOOD AGE TO START MUSIC LESSONS
Our youngest student was 3 years old. It very much depends on the instrument you are thinking about taking, how much finger dexterity it requires, how long of an attention span the student has, and how receptive the student is to coaching. We always advise to give it a try, and we will let you know if we think the student is ready. If not, we will be very honest with you and advise you to wait a little longer, come back perhaps in another year, that way you do not end up wasting your time and money on lessons without a result.
DO I HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO READ MUSIC?
No! Our teachers can teach you how to read music whether you are a beginner child or adult.
DO I NEED TO HAVE AN INSTRUMENT AT HOME TO TAKE MUSIC LESSONS?
Yes, every student should have their own instrument at home so they can practice. We offer violin rentals only to our own students, and any other instruments can be rented locally. Of course, purchasing an instrument is always an option, but before you make a financial investment, we advise you to try out the instrument first, to make sure the instrument you chose is indeed a good fit for you. We will be happy to assist you in finding the best place in town to rent or purchase your instrument.
WHAT DO YOU LEARN IN YOUR MUSIC LESSONS?
That question is often asked by prospective students. Our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals.
We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.
A 7 year old having their first music lesson will have very different needs compared to a 57 year old picking back up music lessons for the 2nd time after having had lessons as a child.
The main reason to choose Forté as your music lesson provider, is that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual.
If you enroll here for lessons, we will work with you to make a plan that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child.
WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC DO YOU TEACH?
We teach all styles from Classical to Rock, Broadway, Pop, Jazz, Country, Blues, Gospel, Sacred, Art Songs, Opera, Contemporary, Foreign Language, Disney, Chart Hits, etc. - you name it, we teach it! With 35+ teachers to choose from at Forté Music School, you are sure to find the best match for YOU.
ARE YOUR INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED?
We search for the top available teachers from around the area, who embody the high values at Forté Music School. Our instructors are highly qualified, all have teaching experience, and most importantly, they have a passion for teaching. Being a musician doesn't automatically make you a teacher - that's why we search for those who are best qualified for mentoring our music students! Most importantly, our instructors strive to relate their teaching to each individual student's learning style. Many of our instructors have gone on performance tours of the USA and Europe, and have years of professional performance and teaching experience. In addition to their teaching credentials, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely patient, friendly, and strive to get to know each student and their parent on a personal level. We search high and low for the BEST teachers around, so you don't have to! For a full list of available teachers, please visit our TEACHERS page.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN AN INSTRUMENT?
This is a very complex question, and there isn't a quick answer for it; it depends on the student's goals. With regular practice, a very basic and simple song can take a few months to learn. Most of our students take lessons on a long-term basis because they want to be constantly improving and they find the lessons enjoyable. Some students continue lessons into college and for the rest of their life. Professional musicians start around age 5, and continue mastering their skills until they reach a Doctoral level. That means around 20 years of private lessons and coaching. As you can see, it really depends on the student's goals.
I DON’T HAVE ANY MUSICAL BACKGROUND OR ABILITY. CAN I STILL HELP MY CHILD PRACTICE?
Yes. Even if you don't have a musical background you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring that they are doing exercises a certain number of times per day, the student will progress. Parents will occasionally sit in on their child's music lesson to get an idea of the proper way a song should sound, or how the student should be positioning their hands.
COULD I SIT IN DURING LESSONS?
Of course! Parents are always welcome to observe the lessons or learn to play along side with the student FOR FREE! Sitting in during lesson is good on one hand because the parent can learn along side with the student, and can help the student at home during practice time. On the other hand, we found out that some students are more receptive to coaching when they are alone with the teacher, as sometimes having a parent in the room can distract the student from focusing. We have observation windows in all rooms, so parents can always observe even when not sitting in the lesson the entire time.
ARE THERE SOME PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES?
Absolutely! A LOT! Every December and June we have our largest bi-annual Student Showcase where around 200 students show off in several recitals over the weekend. Besides those 2 large events, our students participate in a lot of community outreach programs and performance opportunities such as Christmas at the Manor House, West Oak Walk Festival, Ottawa Hills Fall Festival, International Festival, Indian Festival, nursing homes performances, and much more! For a complete list of upcoming and past events, please visit our EVENTS web page.
