Finding Your Rhythm
Supporting Music Students Through Challenges
Learning an instrument is a challenging and rewarding process, and nearly every student gets frustrated or discouraged at some point. We are here to help kids avoid frustration when possible, and work through it when necessary.
Once your student is "over the bump", they'll be able to pick up challenging pieces more easily, and they'll be proud of themselves for sticking with it!
Once your student is "over the bump", they'll be able to pick up challenging pieces more easily, and they'll be proud of themselves for sticking with it!
What you can do:
- Make sure your child's instrument is in good working order -- students will be more easily discouraged if they think they are doing something wrong when the instrument is not in good shape
- Make it a priority to attend the lesson each week -- everyone has to miss a lesson sometimes, but if students are absent frequently, it will be hard to build the habit of practicing with the expectation of meeting the teacher weekly
- Listen to your child practice and regularly offer compliments and encouragement
- Listen to a variety of music with your child, discuss, and encourage active listening
- Encourage your child to show off their skills to family and friends
If your child says they're no longer interested:
- Discuss with your student and try to determine why they are losing interest
- Talk to your child's teacher to see what can be done to find the child's enthusiasm
